How to Make a Smoothie With Frozen Fruit
Making a smoothie with frozen fruit is not only quick and easy, but gets the best results for taste, texture and nutrition.
We recommend you:
- Add 200-250ml of juice to your blender
- Add 150g smoothie bag to your blender
- Blend for 35 seconds, or until smooth, and serve
Why is Frozen Fruit Best For Smoothies?
It is often assumed that fresh fruit is best for nutrition and taste, but frozen fruit has long been overlooked and is, in reality, just as healthy and nutritious. In fact, frozen fruit actually has many benefits over fresh fruit:
- Peak Ripeness – Frozen fruit is flash-frozen using the IQF process within 72 hours of picking, allowing all the essential vitamins and minerals to be kept at their peak. Meanwhile, fresh fruit will have spent days to weeks in transit before they reach you.
- Long Lasting – Frozen fruit has a much longer shelf-life and can be available to you year-round, meaning it is always available for you to use. Quick & Easy – No prep is needed for frozen fruit, it is already cleaned and cut. With frozen fruit, you can have a smoothie in seconds!
- Better Texture – Frozen fruit makes a thicker, fruitier smoothie, with a satisfying texture, as there is no need to add ice to chill it.
- Less Waste – Frozen fruit can help to reduce food waste, as it extends the shelf life of the fruit, whereas fresh fruit is more likely to perish before use.
What Liquid Base to Use For Your Smoothie?
When making a smoothie, you’ll need to add a liquid base to the mix – and it’s more important than you might think! The smoothie base liquid plays a crucial role in taste and texture, as well as any wellness goals you have.
For smoothies, we recommend using our Apple & Pear Smoothie Juice. It is the perfect blend of apple and pear that has been created to perfectly complement every one of our smoothies. It is subtle enough to allow the delicious natural flavours of our smoothie fruits and veg to shine through.
We have experimented with all sorts of smoothie base options, and these are more of our recommendations if you’d like to try other blends:
- Almond milk – tends to be too sweet and doesn’t complement most fruit combinations. It may overpower delicate fruit flavours.
- Dairy milk – it can be too heavy and strongly flavoured to complement fruit-based smoothies. It can also be too sour, detracting from the sweetness of the fruit.
- Coconut water – does not pair well with most fruits, resulting in a clashing flavour.
- Lemon water – can cause an overpowering acid taste that can easily overshadow other ingredients.
Tips for Making the Perfect Smoothie
- Don’t Use Too Many Ingredients: Less can be more when it comes to smoothies. Too many ingredients can cause a mishmash of flavours and textures, while also increasing your costs.
- Use Quality Ingredients: Avoid low-quality or old ingredients as they can lack in flavour and colour. The best way to create flavourful, nutritious smoothies is with quality ingredients, like our flash-frozen fruits.
- Avoid Using Sweeteners: One of the main intentions for drinking a smoothie is its health benefits. So don’t turn it into a sugar-laden, high-calorie drink with too much added sugar or sweetener. Good quality fruit and a juice base should be sweet enough!
- Follow a Recipe: Food professionals have developed smoothies to create the perfect blend of balanced flavours, delicious texture, beautiful colours and health benefits. Follow a recipe to get the best results.
- Consistency is key: Using the right amount of liquid is crucial for getting the perfect texture and flavour for your smoothie. We recommend using 200-250ml liquid per 150g frozen fruit for perfect consistency. If you are using water, reduce this to 125ml instead and let the fruit thaw for a while before you blend. Smoothie sachets also help to create a consistent blend every time!
- Use a High Power Blender: A good quality, high-power blender will ensure that your ingredients are blended thoroughly, providing you with a consistently smooth and creamy texture to your drink.
- Blend For the Right Amount of Time: We recommend blending for 35 seconds in a high-powered, commercial blender. If you blend for too long, the smoothie can become watery, with spoiled flavours. Too short a time and the texture can be uneven and lumpy.
- Clean the Blender: Properly cleaning your blender after use is essential for making the best smoothies. Residual ingredients left in the blender can impart unwanted flavours and odours into your future smoothies, as well as potentially harmful germs and bacteria.
- Allergies: Of course, it's always a good idea to consider different allergies that your customers may have. Checkout our allergies page for more info.
